Is my building suitable for rooftop solar?
Most installers will be able to install panels on both sloped or flat roofs. If there is shade, extreme slopes, or other circumstances that prevent rooftop installation, your installer will be able to recommend alternatives, such as ground mounts.
How long would installing solar on my small business take? Would I have to close my business during installation?
The installation itself is often the quickest step of the solar process. System size will determine the exact amount of time, but most systems can be installed within a working day. While you should speak with your installer for specifics, most installations will allow your business to remain open during the process.
What changes or improvements should I make to my business before going solar?
Common upgrades before going solar include roof repair, electrical panel upgrades, and energy efficiency updates. Your business may qualify for tax credits to make these upgrades. For more information, visit energy.gov’s tax credit page.
Are there additional incentives for small businesses?
If your small business is in a rural area, it may be eligible for the Rural Energy for America Program, or REAP. This program provides loan financing and grant funding for farms and rural small businesses to install renewable energy systems, or make energy efficiency improvements. Grants for renewable energy systems have a $2,500 minimum, and a $1 million maximum, and can cover up to 50% of an eligible system.
Small businesses that are in an eligible area can qualify for the program if they meet one of the following categories:
- Private for-profit entity
- Cooperative
- Electric Utility that serves rural consumers
- Tribal corporation
